Women's Wear Daily (WWD), 4 May 2026
Pichwai motifs, Ajanta cave murals, and classical Indian iconography. Hand-painted in the Nathdwara tradition, then layered with zardozi, aari, and dabka embroidery. Isha Ambani’s first sari on the Met Gala red carpet. Styled by Anaita Shroff Adajania.
In 2024, the studio painted Pichwai motifs on a Manish Malhotra jacket worn by Anant Ambani at his wedding.
The Soni family of Bhilwara has painted in the Nathdwara tradition for generations. Trilok Prakash Soni (b. 1969) trained under his father, Shilp Guru Shri Badrilal Chitrakar, among the most revered traditional painters of the twentieth century.
There was no academy. The training was guru-shishya: years of preparing pigments, watching, helping, beginning again. From this lineage, Trilok carries forward a 400-year-old form of devotion to Shrinathji and Dwarkadheesh. In his own practice, he has extended the tradition.

Detail from a work by Shilp Guru Shri Badrilal Chitrakar
Four centuries of tradition. One artist. One studio. Bhilwara.
For four centuries, Pichwai painting was almost entirely the iconography of Shrinathji at Nathdwara. Trilok Prakash Soni is the sole creator of the Dwarkadheesh form within the Pichwai tradition: Krishna at Dwarka, depicted at full scale for the first time in the history of the art.
The architectural spires of the Dwarkadheesh temple, the sea, the seasonal shringar of the deity. All rendered in the language of Nathdwara: natural mineral pigments, 24K gold leaf, the fine likhai linework. The first dedicated exhibition, Rajadhiraj, was inaugurated in Ahmedabad in 2019 by the Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri Vijay Rupani.
“For the very first time, Lord Dwarkadheesh has been showcased through [Pichwai] paintings.”
